The womb

the womb lamp was thought up around spring of 2022. i don't remember the moment of inspiration that struck my hand into sketching out the design for it, but when i did, i knew that it would take a while to see this piece come to final illumination.

i do however, remember when the feeling of what the lamp could be, solidified into something more visceral and real. i was reading Gabor Mate's book, "The Myth of Normal", and i came across the word "intrauterine". He was talking to the reader... to me... about the external influences that begin to shape a human with all of the beauty and chaos surrounding it while a mother is pregnant... the sounds, the colors, the heat of the sun, the cortisol flooding the mother's nervous system when under stress, the vibrations of the vocal chords creating frequencies of love that were being sung to the unborn child...

while creating this lamp, i took time to meditate on what my mother might have gone through and felt during her pregnancy with me. i called her and asked about the experiences that she went through while she was pregnant. i was her third son, and her most difficult to give birth to. they "gave"... maybe the word forced is better used here... her an epidural in order to ensure that we both survived.

this lamp represents a celebration of life and a tribute to all mothers who bring us into this beautiful world.
